Yeldes Omaruly was a close friend of the prominent philologist Telzhan Shonanova. When in 1937 Shonanova was “exposed” as an “enemy of the people”, he was one of the first to defend him, for which, in fact, he “burned out.” Omarula’s family was evicted from the dormitory of KazGU. It was on October 13, and on November 22, the NKVD authorities arrested Yeldes. On December 1, 1937, at a meeting of the troika of the UNKVD of the Almaty region, he was sentenced to death. The sentence was executed on the same day.
