On August 31 of this year, staff members of the B. Mailin Historical and Regional History Museum delivered a lecture titled “Semipalatinsk Test Site: 35 Years Since Closure,” dedicated to the history of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site, the consequences of nuclear testing, and the historical significance of its closure.
During the lecture, museum staff discussed the history of the site’s creation, the first nuclear test on August 29, 1949, the tests that continued for decades, and their impact on the population and environment. Special attention was given to the “Nevada–Semipalatinsk” anti-nuclear movement and the decision to close the test site on August 29, 1991, which marked a major step for Kazakhstan toward global peace and nuclear disarmament.
Participants learned about the international significance of this date and Kazakhstan’s peacekeeping stance. The lecture contributed to preserving historical memory, fostering a responsible attitude toward peace and security issues, and highlighting the vital importance of renouncing nuclear testing.
